D'Lux Hostel is a nice, comfortable place to stay near the center of Kiev. The hostel provides all the basic necessities, such as: hot water, breakfast, heaters, maps and wi-fi. However, each girl that is on shift-guard has her own set of rules. Or, at least each one approached me in different ways. The Hostel is much cleaner and better organized than I had expected! the bathrooms are in excellent hygienic conditions; you won't find any fungus, dirt, lime or any kind of debris. The bedrooms and kitchen are also very clean; you won't see food on the floor or stains on the tables, bed-sheets or on the floor. The girls at the hostel help you, but most of them are not comfortable speaking English. Marina, the girl that on the shift when I arrived was very nice and polite. However, she did not explain to me how some things work around the hostel, so I had to ask her many things, and when I asked her she would say that it was not necessary to ask. Olga was the next girl on shift, she was the most indifferent of them all and she did not really care what anyone did. She was also the meanest: I would call her by her formal name and she told me not to call her that way in a very rude and improper voice. I just thought is was unprofessional, and that only showed her lack of courtesy. During her shift, at around 9 at night two individuals were watching a video at the meeting room; they had the movie at full volume on their laptop speakers and they were laughing so loud that their laughs could be heard all the way to the 8-Bed room. Olga did not say anything to them. By that, I assumed that is was fine to behave in such way at the meeting room, especially at that time. The next morning, Yulya (the blonde girl) was on shift and at around 11 AM, I grabbed the public laptop the hostel has for any necessity. I started playing music at a considerable volume and she quickly asked me if I had earphones, I said "Yes". Then, she asked me why was I not using them. I did not want to argue about it so I just grabbed my earphones and ignored her. That's when I noticed that each girl has her own rules because there are no signs anywhere saying that you cannot play music on loudspeakers and I just thought it was unfair that I was warned about lowering the volume on my music when the other two individuals were blasting the audio of their video at full volume and laughing loud and they were not told the same as me. The last girl on shift was Yulya (the brunette girl), which by the way it was her first shift! she was the nicest, most polite and enthusiastic girl of the four I met. She is very flexible and easy to approach with any questions you have, she inspires a lot of confidence and she offers you free food! (mandarins) I did not meet Masha, so I cannot judge her. In the end, I would definitely return to this hostel independently if some of the girls are different, the place is very clean, nice and very close to the center of the city. The price for the night is also very reasonable, the wi-fi is fast and there was very little trouble with it. I highly suggest you learn some Russian/Ukrainian before you go, I wish I had! that way you will save many misunderstandings and the girls feel comfortable speaking in their own native tongue.
